President Buhari ‘postpones his promise’ to Nigerians

President Muhammadu Buhari has once again pushed forward a promise he made to Nigerians.

On May 14, during the Anti-Corruption Summit which held in London, President Buhari promised to reveal details of assets recovered by the government from looters of the Nigerian treasury today, May 29.

“So far, what has come out, what has been recovered in whatever currency from each ministries, departments and individuals, I intend on the 29th to speak on this because all Nigerians are getting from the mass media because of the number of people arrested either by the EFCC, DSS. But we want to make a comprehensive report on the 29th.”

Well, contrary to public expectation, President Buhari failed to give details of the alleged recovered funds in his Presidential address to the nation, Sunday morning.

This leaves much to wonder about.

Is he still going to reveal the details of the recovered assets much later in the day?

Or did he just forget that he promised Nigerians while he was on foreign soil that he would show transparency and openness in declaring the said loot?

Quite sadly, this would not be the first time that the President would promise his people something and do another.

Several times, he promised not to remove the subsidy on petrol but on the same May 14 while he was in London, he gave the go ahead for the subsidy regime to be scrapped.

Basically, he made a promise he would eventually break on the same day he broke a promise he made to the people who elected him into office.

On the issue of revealing recovered assets, in his Presidential address, the President said, “We are also engaged in making recoveries of stolen assets some of which are in different jurisdictions. The processes of recovery can be tedious and time consuming, but today I can confirm that thus far: significant amount of assets have been recovered. A considerable portion of these are at different stages of recovery.”

Probably as a form of compensation for his failure to keep his promise, the President ordered that the Ministry of Information periodically publish details on the assets recovered so far.

He said, “Full details of the status and categories of the assets will now be published by the Ministry of Information and updated periodically. When forfeiture formalities are completed these monies will be credited to the treasury and be openly and transparently used in funding developmental projects and the public will be informed.”
