The Presidency has stated that former President Goodluck Jonathan would be prosecuted if it’s proven that he engaged in corrupt acts while in office.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said on Thursday, that President Muhammadu Buhari will not protect anyone found guilty or accused of corruption.
The ongoing investigation into the alleged diversion of over $2.1 billion meant for arms purchase by the last administration, has seen Jonathan’s name mentioned a few times by some of those currently put on trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, who is accused of sharing the funds to some politicians and associates of the former President, has said that he was authorized by Jonathan to disburse the money to facilitate his presidential campaign.
National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, has also admitted to receiving funds from Dasuki to carry out some important assignments for Jonathan.
Ever since Jonathan was suggested as being complicit in the alleged arms funds diversion, the clamour for his investigation has reached fever pitch but the EFCC recently maintained that it had no evidence against him, just yet.
Reacting to this, Femi Adesina revealed to Premium Times that if Jonathan is found guilty, he would face prosecution, while adding that there’s no existing agreement between the former president and the incumbent president on the matter of a possible ‘corruption trial’.
He was quoted to have said: “There is no accord. If the corruption fight needs to get there (making Mr. Jonathan face justice), it will get there.”
“There is no accord that if corruption is proven, it will not be tried. With this president, nobody will be protected. And I underscore it, if it needs to get anywhere, it will get there.”
