[The Presidential Blog] Did President Buhari really just call Tinubu “the Jagaban”?

You know how it is with the President and all his birthday and condolence messages on Twitter. From Solomon Dalung to former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon (rtd).

We were almost too dismissive of President Buhari’s birthday wish to the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the APC leader turns 65 today. He’d posted this three-part tweet extolling the Asiwaju’s virtues as a great leader and “a gift for building consensus”. Of course! Or who made 2015 possible, politically?

See right there? The last tweet: ” May God grant the Jagaban good health and long life, and more wisdom to serve Nigeria and humanity”.

Since Olamide’s track, Paco Rabanne dropped, we’d all but forgotten the real owner of the title, “Jagaban” – the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. How he came to be known by that alias has almost become an elusive fact but all we know is that it is an alias we had no idea the President would choose to use to refer to him. And on Twitter too!

How the “Jagaban” came to be…

The current Emir of Borgu, Halliru Dantoro, last year explained how his long history with Tinubu from the Senate up until his battles to become Emir led him to bestow on the Asiwaju, the title of Jagaban which means: “Leader of Warriors”.

We are not fooled into believing President Buhari typed up that tweet by himself (does he even care about this social media business?) but we cannot put it entirely beyond a President famed for his healthy sense of humour to have instructed whoever published that tweet.

Cute, isn’t it? By the way, can you imagine President Buhari pronouncing the word “Ja-ghwa-bhan”? Jokes!
