‘Oil price deregulation is the best way to help suffering Nigerians’- Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed wants Nigerians to know that the recent deregulation of the price of petrol is the best policy the government can come up with to alleviate the suffering of the masses.

Explaining that the hardship would not last long, the minister pleaded with the labour unions threatening to go on strike over the increase in fuel price to lay down their swords and understand the dire situation the country is in.

Lai Mohammed, speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, May 16 revealed that the scarcity of foreign exchange made it cumbersome for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to be the sole importer of petrol- an explanation which the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has extensively given to the teeming horde of discontented Nigerians.

He said: “Many have been asking why this would happen at this time and what triggered the decision concerning the new framework for petrol products supply, distribution and pricing.

“Gentlemen, we have no choice than to liberalize the price of petrol, if we are to end the crippling fuel scarcity that has enveloped the country, ensure the availability of the products and end the suffering of our people over the lingering scarcity.”
