Pro-Biafra protests: Hausa community in Onitsha remain in hiding

Following the death of nine people and the destruction of properties during the two-day pro-Baifra protest in Onitsha, Anambra, members of the Hausa community in the city have gone into hiding.

While the pro-Biafra protests lasted, the Onitsha central mosque, a nomadic school and many other properties belonging to the Hausa community were destroyed.

Punch reports that the residents of the state, from the northern region of the country, are yet to open shops for business, since the protests ended.

The report disclosed that most of the Hausa community in Onitsha were temporarily residing in the Nigerian Army and Nigeria Police barracks in the area, over the fear of vengeful attacks on them by the pro-Biafrans.

A resident was quoted to have said that some of the northern residents of the city only come to do business at night, and are hardly seen during the day.

Meanwhile, the state Police spokesperson, DSP Ali Okechechukwu, said the situation is under control.

“The situation is calm. Nobody should be afraid or hide. The police have brought back normalcy to Onitsha after the storm and we are ever prepared to sustain the peace and order in Onitsha.”
