Woman wants out of 8-year union because of hubby’s failure to pay dowry

On Thursday, 19 September, a 25-year-old trader, Mrs Modinat Alade, begged the Customary Court sitting in Isyein, Oyo State, to dissolve her 8-year union with her husband, Gbola Alade over his refusal to pay her dowry.

She said the marriage was yet to produce a child, while also citing lack of care and love from her husband, saying the situation was “worrisome and unbearable.”

She said, “When we are about to get married, he told my people that he will pay the dowry later and also perform the normal family rites. Until today he has not deemed it fit to make good his promises, and I am sure, that was why we have not been able to have any child since then.”

“I have done all I could to persuade him, but he did not listen. I have even talked to his family members about it and nothing came out of it. If Gbola really loves me, I am sure he would have done the needful, it’s so obvious that he does not love me, so please let my lord separate us for the sake of God.”

Chief Raimi Oyegbenle, the court President, said that the husband, Gbola had written to inform the court about his unavoidable absence.

Consequently, he adjourned the case till 30 September for Gbola’s defence and further hearing on the matter.
