Ministerial appointment can’t save Amaechi from prosecution – Wike

The Rivers state government has stated that former state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, won’t be spared from prosecution, in spite of his ministerial appointment.

River State Governor, Nyesom Wike, had set a judicial commission of inquiry to probe the sale of assets belonging to the state by the immediate past administration of Amaechi.

Amaechi was among the 21 ministerial nominees sent to the Senate for screening by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Reacting to Amaechi’s inclusion, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Rivers State Governor, Opunabo Inko-Tariah, said the nomination will not stop the sitting of the Justice George Omereji-led judicial commission of inquiry.

Opunabo stated that ministers do not enjoy immunity and as such, the report of the commission of inquiry will be implemented.

He said: “The nomination of Rotimi Amaechi doesn’t in any way deprive the recommendations of the Justice Omereji’s panel of its effect. Ministers have no immunity and so can’t be insulated from prosecution if and when found guilty of any ineptitude.

“Nevertheless, I am not privy to the findings and recommendations of the panel and so I’m not in a position to say whether they are against or in favour of Amaechi to warrant prosecution.”
