#RiversRerun: INEC staff taken hostage in Andoni LGA

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it will hold at Akuku Toru local government area on Sundat after previous polls in the area was nullified due to explosions and snatching of electoral materials.

In a statement on Sunday, INEC said another election will be held in the local government.

The commission also said elections could not hold in Andoni local government because INEC staff were held hostage.

INEC said, “The elections in Akuku Toru were cancelled yesterday following explosions of dynamite and snatching of electoral materials by hoodlums.

Following an agreement amongst Stakeholders, the National and State Assembly elections in Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers state were rescheduled to hold today (Sunday,11th December 2016).

“In Andoni Local Government Area, INEC staff were held hostage and elections could not hold. Consequently, the Security agencies reinforced with a view to rescuing them and completing the elections today.”
