Robbers attack bank, kill policeman, 4 others

A dare-devil robbery gang has reportedly killed five persons in Ogbagi Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State following a robbery attack on a branch of the Skye Bank Plc in the town on Tuesday, The Punch reports.

The operation which was successful saw the robbers carting away with an unspecified amount of money.

Among those killed were the security man attached to the bank, a policeman,  a septuagenarian and two other people.

According to an eyewitness, the hoodlums blew up the door of the bank before they could gain entrance.

The eyewitness said the robbers shot sporadically into the air after the operation, making the residents run around for safety while some were injured as they were hit with stray bullets.

Men of the Nigerian Army were said to have arrived the scene some minutes after the robbers had finished the operation and left.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident said he had information that three people died in the robbery operation.

He said the robbers were 15 in number and they came on motorcycles to carry out the attack.

He said, “One Adebayo Onipona, who is a blind 73-year-old man, one David Joseph, the security man at the bank were killed and we also lost a police seargent, Abubakar Umar. We are on their trail and we will get them .”

Joseph said the corpses of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Owo.
