Rocking the culture! Our Top 10 Websites pick for 2011

By Emmanuel Osanedum

In no particular order, we look at the ten websites over the past year, considering culture, entertainment and lifestyle that have impressed us and caught everyone’s attention:

LindaIkeji.BlogSpot.com

It’s amazing what LindaIkeji has become in the past one year: from the mundane, like the brouhaha over Mercy Johnson’s wedding, to the sublime (see the advocacy over the #ABSURape), Linda Ikeji has proven that she is Nigeria’s most powerful online personality. Overtaking other “proper”, erstwhile more popular, online media; anything that’s on Linda gets everyone, everywhere talking. And she’s not the only star of her platform – you’ve got to talk about those commenters. Dang!

OneNigerianBoy.BlogSpot.com

Well he just won Online Publication of the Year at the FAB Awards, so he’s got to be on to something, no? With OneNigerianBoy, Terrence Sambo has slowly and steadily made himself a fashion pre-eminence in the Nigerian space. Everyone with an eye on fashion pays attention, and Terrence continues to have his eyes on the best pictures and the hottest trends.

BellaNaija.com

No matter how many others secure more hits or visits, BellaNaija is still ‘Nigeria’s Number One Cool Kid’. There’s no one or nothing too dirty for Bella to clean up; once they touch it, it moves to the cool column. Did you see what they did with the Mercy Johnson’s wedding story? In addition, everything about fashion, style, entertainment and weddings had BellaNaija front right and centre this year – just like they’ve always done. We stay rooting for these trailblazers!

TheNetNg.com

They never fail with their value proposition – if its entertainment, TheNetNg will have it first. Awards, deaths, scandals, pregnancies, interviews and the entire works… the team of hard-nosed reporters at the entertainment and breaking news site have worked hard to earn their name and to build a brand they should be proud of. How do they do it though?

360Nobs.com

Well, one thing you should know, it doesn’t matter what you say, Noble Igwe will keep going. And along with Oye Akindeinde and the rest of his hardworking team, 360Nobs has been on top of all things music and all things sexy this year. It’s certainly a site to visit if you want to get the buzz and we have an eye on them as they expand and reload for the New Year. Oh, by the way – are you cool enough to be at the SL… USH Get It On party next week?

CPAfrica.com

CP-Africa is a hub for all positive news about Nigeria and the continent, and this means that it is mostly on the front seat whenever news breaks or something truly transformational happens especially with the growing youth market, or with entertainment and lifestyle. It also gets more than its fair share of technology and governance and because of this uniqueness, CP-Africa continues to stay on top and to drive the conversation. We celebrate the celebrators!

Blog.FabMagazineOnline.com

Our friends at FAB get an A for consistency – as an aggregator of all information cool and relevant, they have quietly but steadily inched up online ratings. With strong fashion and style updates from their excellent magazine, it is not difficult to see why the FAB blog will be one to go to as a matter of course in the coming year.

TheNakedConvos.com

We don’t care what the Alexa ratings say – if we were to go by the sheer amount of Twitter ‘talkability’ for this blog, as well as the amount of comments that the blog’s posts on sex, relationships and the gender wars get, coupled with offline events that now have a cult following, we’d say Wale Adetula, the man behind the naked vision, has his finger on the pulse. For building a distinct identity and a blue ocean of readership in what is becoming a cluttered space, TheNakedConvos get our thumbs up.

TechLoy.com

Where were you when TechLoy.com shot up to top 100 on Alexa, and it’s not a music, movies, fashion, style or gossip site? Maybe it’s because the New Nigeria’s passing you by? And with all the change the guys at Microsoft, Google, the CCHub and wherever else are driving through technology in Nigeria, you are still looking at the tip of the iceberg. Loy Okezie, who runs this blog, has been there from the beginning, and he’s reaping the fruits of foresight. And he makes technology so fun to read!

NotJustOk.com

Do we really need to talk about NotJustOk.com? The fact that they got all the hottest music before anyone else? The fact that all the artistes worship at their feet? The fact that the comments on that site can make or break your career? The fact of the huge success of the Enigma competition? Or the fact that, to prove they have the power beyond the online space, they are bringing it home with the NotJustOk concert where everyone and their pets are performing? It’s more than just okay!

Editor’s Note:

Yeah yeah, we know you’re upset we didn’t put YNaija.com up on here, with all the moving and shaking we’ve been up to this year – but we’re cool like that: )
