Sad: 5 feared dead in Lagos Tin Can explosion

Five people reportedly died in the explosion which occurred yesterday at the MRS Jetty located at the Tin Can Island Port, Apapa, when an oil barge was offloading its products.

The explosion shook buildings as far as 500 meters away from the explosion and shattered glass doors and windows which signified the intensity of the explosion.

The incident which happened around 11:30am affected the administrative building of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Ports and Cargo complex and a branch of First Bank situated hundreds of meters away from the scene.

Sources say the it occurred after a barge, a small ship bringing in fuel from the mothership, which was offloading premium motor spirit (PMS) into an MRS tank farm was improperly handled.

The explosion reportedly caused a lot of panic with people wondering what the source of the explosion was.

By noon, business activities at the port had grounded to a halt with people gathering in small groups to discuss the incident.

There has been no official statement from the petroleum marketing company, MRS, and its business premises was cordoned off by security agents who refused entry to unauthorizsd personnel.

A source said at least five lifeless bodies wrapped in white cloths were seen being taken away to an unknown morgue before everyone was ordered to vacate the premises.
