A housewife, Fatsuma Isa, from Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State allegedly raped by a commercial motorcycle has died.

The mother of four died shortly after her discharge from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, (ABTBUTH), Bauchi She was discharged from the hospital on March 21, 2013. Fatsuma, who was five months pregnant, was allegedly raped by Auwalu Yaye, a neighbour leading to her miscarriage.

The victim, who spoke with newsmen at her hospital bed, had alleged that Auwalu raped her in front of her two children aged three and five respectively.

The mother and two of her children were said to be heading to Bakala in Brugga on Aulwalu’s motorcycle when he diverted into the bush and raped her. She said Auwalu stabbed her on her left hand with a knife and threatened to kill her if she did not agree to have sex with him.

She was rushed to the hospital in Bauchi by her husband, Isa Umar after the incident. “I feel ashamed of myself because he has tarnished my name and reputation,” Fatsuma had told newsmen in an interview shortly after was discharged from the hospital.

“People will look at me as a wayward woman. “Now people will think of me as an irresponsible woman. I knew no man except my husband. I feel very sad.” Isa Umar described the death of his wife as painful, saying she died out of frustration.

“Her soul won’t rest in peace unless Auwalu is brought to justice,” husband of the deceased said. Bauchi State Officer of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, Barrister Zubayr Hanbali expressed shock and sadness at the death of Fatsuma. Hanbali therefore pleaded with the police to properly investigate the matter to ensure that justice prevails.

He said: “Her case was brought to us by the husband and I happened to discuss with her and she told me her ordeal. “The only thing the family wants is to get justice because the motto of the Legal Aid Council is justice for the oppressed to stop oppression.’ “We are going to do our best to ensure that the suspect,, Auwalu Yaye is arraigned before a court of law.

“In fact, the FIR has not been released but it is still not too late for Auwalu to face the charges against him.” “I am calling on the Ministry of Justice to take over the matter to ensure that justice is done. “We are not passing judgement on Auwalu but we want the court to prove that Auwalu is guilty or not.

“It is not ideal to allow such things to pass because it does not make anybody to be safe and Auwalu was even the disease’s neighbour.”
