Samson Siasia explains why Nigerian players don’t care about the national team

by Mark Bassey

Former gaffer of the Super Eagles, Samson Siasia, says the indifference of Nigeria’s football administrators to the well-being of players is the sole factor behind the players’ reluctance to give everything when representing Nigeria.

While speaking on a sports programme, Siasia said despite the fact that Osaze Odemwingie was sidelined with a lengthy injury, no Nigerian official has deemed it fit to call the Stoke striker.

He said, “You can’t expect a player to give his heart out when he knows people that are supposed to care about your general well-being don’t.”

“That is why the players don’t care if Nigeria wins or loses. You can imagine Osaze has been injured for over a month now but nobody has called him to ask how he is holding up, I was the only person that called him even though he didn’t pick, he sent me an text message saying ‘coachie thanks for your concern, I had a successful surgery;’ that is how you build a relationship” Siasia added.

In an interview he had last month, Siasia stated his readiness to manage the national team again after contract negotiations issues between the current coach Stephen Keshi and the NFF have seemingly stalled.
