Say what?! 9-year-old student arrested for bringing loaded gun onto school bus

A Florida 9-year-old brought a .22-caliber Derringer handgun onto a school bus.

A 9-year-old Florida boy was arrested after authorities said he brought a loaded .22-caliber derringer on a packed school bus and an eagle-eyed driver spotted the weapon.

Debra Dryden told the Tampa Bay Times that she noticed something suspicious on the bus ride to Ippolito Elementary School as the 9-year-old was sitting next to an older student, as most children prefer to sit with students their own age.

“I heard the other student say something to the effect of, ‘I won’t be picking on you anymore,'” Dryden, 51, told the paper. “You can tell when they’re up to something.” She reported the strange interaction to the bus’ dispatcher, who in turn, alerted authorities.

It wasn’t until Dryden pulled the bus into the school that she said she saw the boy transfer the loaded handgun into his pants pocket.

School bus driver Debra Dryden spotted the gun and the suspicious-acting student on her bus and contacted her dispatcher, who alerted authorities.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s spokesman Larry McKinnon told the Times that the 35-odd students on the bus were unloaded while the boy in question was kept on.

He initially denied having the gun.

According to First Coast News, the boy’s parents were alerted and he was taken to the Hillsborough County Juvenile Center for booking. However, no charges have been filed against the boy.

Parents of children at the school were alerted of the incident.
