3 months after President Muhammadu Buhari submitted the initial copy of the nation’s budget, the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, March 23, ratified the 2016 Appropriation Bill.
Since its submission, the 2016 budget has been the subject of heated national discourse, owing to the discovery of several inflated figures, inconsistent budgeting and outright padding of the document – hence, the delay.
The Senate, after the third and final reading, passed the nation’s N6,077,680,000,000 budget which was presented by the president to a joint session of the National Assembly.
While speaking during plenary, Senate President, Bukola Saraki said the onus is now on the executive arm of government to implement the budget.
“We noted the initial hiccups of the 2016 budget and believe the 2017 process will be better”, Saraki said.
