Senate has not postponed 2016 budget passage indefinitely – Ali Ndume

Majority leader of the Senate, Ali Ndume has issued some clarification regarding the passage of the 2016 budget.

Senator Ndume on Sunday, disclosed that the upper chamber of the national assembly would try as much as possible to make sure the 2016 budget is passed before the end of March.

While giving March as the deadline for the implementation of the 2016 budget, Ndume said the Senate would endeavour to ratify the document before that time.

He said the budget has not been suspended indefinitely, while noting the initial deadline date- February 25- was no longer feasible.

“We have not postponed it indefinitely; we are saying that with the developments that we are seeing as the time goes on, the 25th February deadline we gave ourselves may not be realistic.

“That is why we now said that going by this, it is not possible to say we will come back on 25th and say this is the budget; we are not saying that we have suspended it indefinitely.

“The reason we fixed 25th was to have a gap of five weeks,” he said.

Owing to the discovery of several errors and inconsistencies in the budget, the Senate leader says the five-week window would be extended.
