Why Buhari’s nominees may have been rejected by Senate on Wednesday

It’s been revealed that the Senate was ready to reject the nominees of President Muhammadu Buhari, who were to be screened on Wednesday.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, had read the names of the nominees from Buhari, during plenary on Tuesday and he was mandated by the Senate rules to raise the matter on the next day of sitting, to determine when and how the screening will be conducted.

However, Saraki reportedly did a random survey of the opinion and mood of the Senate towards the nominees screening, to ascertain their disposition.

The Senate President would discover that his colleagues were upset over the fact that the nominees had assumed office and were already acting in their various capacities contrary to the law.

In essence, if the nominees were to be deliberated on, on that particular day, the Senators would have summarily rejected them.

Consequently, Saraki made sure that the matter was not listed on the Order Paper for the day and he also refused to mention the issue on the floor.

Senator Barnabas Gemade, had even mentioned the issue and raised a point of order during the plenary sitting under Order 40, Rule 1, that: “The President of the Senate shall immediately after prayers ….read to the Senate any message addressed to the Senate by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Saraki would however, counter Gemade by citing Order 40, Rule 2 which states that: “A message from the President, if presented to the Senate by the Leader of the Senate may be brought up at any time before the commencement or at the close of public business, and shall be considered forthwith or ordered to be considered upon a future day”, The phrase relied on Saraki to save the day is ‘considered upon a future day’.”
