Senate Presidency: Implications of Saraki’s win

Bukola-Saraki1

Senator Bukola Saraki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been elected as the Senate President of the 8th National Assembly. Saraki, a former Governor of Kwara state, who was supported by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday was unanimously elected as the Senate President. He defeated Ahmad Lawan, who was the preferred candidate of the APC.

Considering the drama surrounding his emergence as Senate President, there’s going to be a massive ripple effect across the board.

  1. Ambitious Saraki
Saraki is someone who can and will do anything to achieve his ambition. A lot might have doubted the man, but he is someone who knows how to play the game.
  2. Tinubu loses
Bola Tinubu has been handed his first major defeat in national politics. Tinubu has been on an unbelievable streak so this definitely is a shocker of sorts. You win some, you lose some, Jagaban.
  3. PDP gets revenge
PDP senators aren’t the majority in the house and party just lost the presidency. Jumping in the Saraki’s bandwagon makes ridiculous sense. They also get revenge for 2011 and Tambuwal.
  4. Transparency
A transparent National Assembly is finally a possibility. Saraki presents our best shot at ending the “business as usual” attitude at #NASS.
  5. Lawan’s supporters
After the mock vote, Lawan supporters showed their hands way too early in the game. This will definitely put them on Saraki’s bad side and you definitely don’t want to be on Saraki’s bad side.

  1. @Transparency, i totally disagree with that…. & it will begin to play out in the next few days as follows: Juicy positions will go to David Mark; Akpabio; Andy Uba; Rabiu Kwakwanso; Atiku’s Senators; Stella Oduah; Dino Melaye and any other moneybag Senators from PDP. Any APC senator who wants a good Committee headship must swear allegiance to Saraki. What have we then gone back to? What we voted against. Akpabio is the greatest advocate of impunity & he supports it actively wt money. Ministers will have to play ball to have their budgets approved. “Take a bow” will continue for PDP favoured candidates & bills from the Executive will be delayed unnecessarily. Pls note that Saraki has no allegiance to anybody except PDP as thats his DNA/make up. He knows APC will never give him a platform again to move higher, so, its back to PDP soon….Watch this space

  2. where is the JAGABAN or is he sleeping? i can’t laugh ooooooooooo o jare!

  3. well wat did u expect from a son that did nt take a very last blessin from his father, omo buruku ti n dale ru, apc has made a mistake of acceptin everybody, , this shoild be a lesson for apc, make a research before acceptin any member

  4. Victory comes with fairplay. Is winning without an opponent fair? Nevertheless APC wrote the rules at the middle of the game. The naivete of the APC becomes clear here, let them learn from this betrayal. But I fear the change we expect is about to suffer a dive. PDP’s treachery continues.

  5. Whatever is the situation Saraki must operate under the constitution of Nigeria and must never act on his power.Long live Nigeria.CHANGE.

  6. good for saraki, but why is APC this hostile, looking at the victory of saraki it is the best that at this time.

  7. Your analysis of these implications is shallow and pedestrian

  8. Good for Saraki . But my question now is , is saraki now in APC or PDP ?
