Why the Nigerian Senate will be more divided than ever on Tuesday

When the National Assembly resumes sitting on Tuesday, the Senate will be more divided than at any other time in its history.

The lawmakers have been on break since August 13.

The ongoing trial of Senate President, Bukola Saraki, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal has further driven a wedge between the lawmakers.

While the Senators opposed to Saraki’s position as Senate President, would possibly ask for his resignation as a result of the false assets declaration trial.

Pro-Saraki senators would however, resist the attempt to let the resignation talk come to fruition, with the argument that Saraki is still innocent of the charges until judicial process is concluded.

It is believed that the Senators are fully prepared for a battle of wills, words and laws, on Tuesday, when they return to the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

On one side of the ring is the Senate Unity Forum, which is hellbent on ousting Saraki while the ‘Like Minds’ senators, are prepared to fight tooth and nail to have him remain as President of the senate.

In spite of the fact that Saraki belongs to the All Progressives Congress, most of those loyal to him are from the Peoples Democratic Party.

This is as a result of his repeated defiance of his party; by contesting for the Senate Presidency and going rogue with his selection of principal officers of the Senate.
