Seriously speaking, Atiku Abubakar may be posturing for 2019

After Muhammadu Buhari comes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in the order of perennial presidential candidates

Since 2007, the former Vice President has repeatedly vied for the Presidency, and has repeatedly failed to win even as he jumps from one political party to another, forming high-powered political affiliations along the way.

But the curious thing about Atiku is the fact that he has refused to fade away or go silent as most people do after unsuccessfully running for an elective position.

He keeps coming back, again, and again.

Presently, It would appear that the former Vice President is consciously, if not painstakingly, embedding himself into every conversation, finding ways to remain relevant and effectively using the media.

Atiku is doing the right thing, saying the right thing and supporting the right causes.

His level of political correctness is so high that it makes it likely that the man has his eyes set on running for the Presidency come 2019.

His speech at the launch of a book titled “We Are All Biafrans,” written by Chido Onumah, is remarkably striking not just because he spoke on unpopular topics but because of his direct, albeit subtle, attack on President Muhammadu Buhari.

Over the last few months, Atiku has reached out to regions and ethnic minorities that are dissatisfied with the central government and has established moral justification for unpopular causes, like the agitations in the southern part of the country.

However, the question remains, under which platform will he run in 2019?

Atiku has remained low-key in the activities of his political party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), since losing the party’s presidential primary to the incumbent President.

Perhaps the former Vice President is banking on the possibility that the APC – a party composed of unlikely and seemingly incompatible persons and interest- will burst at its seams and divide into factions, thus providing a platform to run on come 2019.

But our fingers are crossed and we remain expectant as we watch the political drama that will soon unfold.
