Nigeria is a volatile nation, particularly the North-East region where Boko Haram has laid waste to thousands of human life, livestock, as well as properties.

Over the years, violent actions have erupted in different parts of the country – especially in the northern region – due to carelessly made statements by politicians hiding under the cloak of patriotism and ethnic championing.

More often than not, these politicians seek to portray themselves, and their political party, as righteous and every other person, as guilty.

Borno state is rife with many disgruntled individuals (which, in all honestly, they should be) after suffering decades of government neglect and years of Boko Haram terrorism, hence, the statement made by the state governor, Kashim Shettima, calling for stoning of PDP supporters in the state should be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

Shettima had stated that: “The politicians who left us to our troubles in the last five years only to come back when peace has returned to the state to tell us that Jonathan’s administration was better than the present should be stoned just like the Satan is stoned at the Kaaba.”

While most Nigerians, with a happy sense of schadenfreude, will be more than glad to see the present class of politicians and public officials gone from the scene, Governor Shettima should not forget that he’s as guilty as those whose death he’s calling for.

After all, it was under his watch, in 2014, that 274 young school girls were kidnapped from their boarding school in the most bizarre circumstance.

What’s more, the careless utterance of the Governor is capable of instigating bitter enmity within the political class and violent actions in the region – that’s rife with distraught, economic hardship and religious sentiments.

It is of utmost importance that one reminds the governor, that we are not in the stone age, neither are we savages.

If he has a case against political opponents, he should file criminal proceedings against them and allow the judicial machinery to run its course rather than try, sentence and execute them in the court of public opinion.

Dear Governor Shettima, again, we are not savages. Try and relearn the rules of being a human in the 21st century.
