Shi’ite Muslims protest in Kaduna, vows to trek to Abuja

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, popularly known as Shi’ites, on Wednesday, protested the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, and other members by state security agents.

According to The Punch, the protesters, composed of mostly women and children, defied police orders as they protested at the Muhammadu Buhari Way in Kaduna City, carrying placard embossed with the face of El-Zakzaky and chanting for his release.

The leader of the protesters, Abdullahi Mohammed, called on the federal government to release El-Zakzaky, who has been in government detention since December last year.

One women, a protester, Fauziya Saidu, said that they trekked from Zaria, where the Shi’ite headquarters is, and that they plan to walk to Abuja to continue their protest, noting that they will remain in Abuja till their leader is released.

She disclosed that “nothing can stop us on our way to Abuja. We started trekking from Zaria since yesterday (Tuesday) and some military personnel were taking our photographs.”

Saidu further said that the military should be held responsible if “anything should happen to us on our way to Abuja.”
