SHOCKING: 2 boys found strangled in car boot after disappearing with their dad

Family … Sanjeev, Eoghan and Ruairi
The devastated mum of the two boys found strangled in a car yesterday was left “shocked and numb”.

Tragic Eoghan, ten, and Ruairi, five, were Kathleen Chada’s “pride and joy”, admitted their parish priest in Bagenalstown, Co Carlow.

The youngsters’ bodies were found dumped in the boot of a car which crashed just hours after gardai issued a nationwide appeal for their safety.

Bodies found … two young boys

Sanjeev Chada, 43, sparked Ireland’s first ever Child Rescue Ireland Alert — based on the US ‘Amber Alert’ system — yesterday after he disappeared from his home with his children. The pair were last seen with their dad on Sunday night en route to the Dome Bowling Centre in Carlow Town.

They were reported missing by Kathleen at 1.30am before the CRI alert was issued at lunchtime yesterday. But the boys’ mum was left distraught just a few hours later after their bodies were recovered at Rosbeg, Westport, Co Mayo.

The discovery was made after a passer-by noticed the dark green Ford Focus smashed into a wall.

Mr Chada, originally from India, is believed to have survived the smash after the vehicle’s airbag was activated.

Gardai are investigating reports the unemployed man tried to hang himself after getting out of the vehicle. The Irish Sun can also reveal he was at the centre of a garda probe into an alleged €50,000 embezzlement offence.

The investigation related to the loss of funds at a local community centre.

He was found by locals and later brought to hospital where he was in a stable condition last night. He was also being kept under armed guard.

Parish priest Fr Declan Foley, who was in the family home when Kathleen received the heartbreaking news, paid tribute to her sons.

He said: “They were extremely popular and were sports fanatics.

“Thanks be to God there were a lot of people in the house, including Kathleen’s parents, brothers and extended family and friends.

Smash site … officers comb the area yesterday

“It was like as if an earthquake hit the place. It was devastating for all of us.

“You can’t put into words the shock and numbness and pain and grief of that news coming through. They’re her two boys, her pride and joy. The community itself is ruptured by this sad news.”

Kathleen, who works as a nurse in a south Dublin IVF clinic, commutes from Carlow while her husband stayed at home.

She is originally from the area and lives near parents Willie and Patsy Murphy.

It is understood Mr Murphy, who was in his daughter’s house with the boys’ grandmother when the family were notified of their deaths, had to be treated for shock.

One colleague said: “Kathleen is a lovely lady who was devoted to her two children. She talked about them all the time and was so proud of them. It’s just so hard to imagine something like this has happened.

Horror discovery … the scene at Rosbeg, Mayo, after the smashed Ford Focus was found

“Her colleagues are in a state of shock and will give her all the support she needs.” Officers are also investigating if Mr Chada may have been in financial difficulty. The scene of the car smash was last night being examined by the Gardai’s forensic experts. Cops were treating the case as a missing person’s investigation but this has now been upgraded to a double murder probe. The nationwide manhunt was launched after the CRI alert.

Details of the alert included signs being electronically posted on the country’s motorway network.

But the alert was later withdrawn after the discovery of the children’s bodies.

Another priest in Carlow, Fr Paddy Byrne, also paid tribute to the family.

He said: “I’ve only been in Carlow for a year but I knew the family very well. The children came from a lovely family and they were beautiful. Everyone loved them because they were just so nice. It’s hard to believe something this awful has happened and our thoughts and prayers are with them. Everyone has been devastated by this tragedy.”

Most of the coaching staff, members and officials from the hurling club of Ballinkillen where Eoghan and Ruairi played were too shaken to talk about the boys yesterday.

A spokeswoman for the club said the whole community wanted to extend their condolences to the family. Another stunned member said everyone associated with the club “were only coming to terms with the news”.

Supt Dave Taylor urged anyone with information about the tragic case to come forward.
