MC Daleste, whose real name was Daniel Pellegrine, was 20 when he died.

An unknown assassin struck down a popular Brazilian singer Saturday with a single, fatal gunshot in a brazen mid-concert attack.

The blast to the chest killed MC Daleste in a violent incident caught on video that left concert-goers able only to watch in horror. Known also by his real name Daniel Pellegrine, the 20-year-old was performing in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

A nearly 90-second video shows MC Daleste on stage in front of a room in San Martin crowded with camera-wielding teens. As he introduces his next song to a funk beat, a muffled shot is heard and Daleste lets out a gasp and sits down. His confused entourage goes to his aid as concert-goers scream. The baby-faced singer drops the microphone, sending feedback through the stage’s speakers.

He was rushed to the hospital but died of his injuries, the website CKHID.com reported.

Brazil, set to host next year’s World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Summer Olympics, has been in the world spotlight as the country’s leaders and law enforcement grapple with endemic violence. Gangs and other shootings are rampant in the 200 million-person nation. Only last week, a mob of people beat and decapitated a soccer referee who stabbed a soccer player to death during a game.

Police have yet to announce an arrest in this latest public act of violence, which was condemned by Daleste’s friends.

“Another Warrior, another MC of the Funk spiritually leaves us unexpectantly [sic],” a friend left on the artist’s Facebook page. “He left the stage without saying goodbye, a victim of intolerance! A great loss to our family of Funk!”
