An eight-day-old  baby has been allegedly killed for ritual purposes by her 24-year-old step-father in Delta State. The suspect who has confessed to the crime said he was directed to do it by a spiritualist based in Ghana.

The baby’s mother reported the incident to the police saying the suspect used a cutlass to split the young baby open and make away with her internal organs.

While confirming the incident to the Vanguard Newspapers yesterday in Asaba, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Charles Muka said, “One Mrs. Gladys Emafuru, of Okunu village Jesse, reported that at 15:10 hours, while sleeping with her eight-day-old baby girl, the child’s step father (name withheld), walked into the apartment and killed the baby with a cutlass, opened the stomach and collected the intestines and other vital parts.”

“The suspect after collecting the vital parts of the baby, concealed them in a black cellophane bag and was about escaping to Ghana when he was caught. He has confessed committing the act, saying that it was demanded for in Ghana,” Muka added.

It is not clear if the suspect and the baby’s mother lived together when the incident happened or how he gained access to the house to commit the alleged crime.

Such ritual killings are unfortunately on the rise in many parts of Nigeria owing to the desire of many people to get rich quick by spiritual means.
