The unidentified man died late Friday, hours after he reportedly doused himself with gasoline and set himself on fire.

 

The gasoline-soaked man who set himself ablaze on the National Mall died hours later from his horrific injuries, officials said Saturday.

The unidentified man — who was airlifted Friday to a Washington hospital after the 4:20 p.m. self-immolation — died later that evening, said Officer Araz Alali of the District of Columbia police.

Passerbys ripped off their shirts to help put out the flames.

The victim suffered “severe burns encircling most of his body,” said Alali.

The dead man was so badly disfigured by the flames that officials will need DNA and dental records to identify him, the officer said.

Authorities were unsure what prompting the fiery suicide, which occurred before a crowd of witnesses in the middle of the nation’s capital on a warm fall day.

Passing joggers yanked off their shirts and attempted to extinguish the flames as onlookers gaped in disbelief. the man was later pronounced dead at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

The man walked to the center of the sprawling mall with a red can of gasoline, doused himself and then set himself ablaze, witnesses said.

The incident happened on the National Mall, in between the National Gallery of Art and the Air and Space Museum.

He was fully engulfed by the time U.S. Park Police reached the scene.
