SOMETHING NEW: Funbi – Shakespeare with a melody

by ‘Damilola Oyedele

Funbi’s story is a budding fairy tale. As a teenager, he was nicknamed ‘Shakespeare’ because of the numerous love poems he wrote after being rejected by his high school crush. With the help of a classmate, Silver Scott, these poems were turned into songs, and thus began the journey of Funbi the singer and composer.

The young man, whose seven-year vocal training began as a little boy at the Chapel of the Light Church Choir, grew up listening to the music of heavyweight rap artists Tupac and Notorious BIG until he discovered the smooth music of KC & Jojo, Ginuwine, Usher and Craig David.

The rest, as they say, is history, as Funbi has now been signed on to music label, TopLeft Entertainment, and has already collaborated with some of the best in the industry. “[His songs] are on a course to take the world by storm,” says Otoide Ayemere of TopLeft Entertainment.

Funbi’s first single, Superstar was released on Monday the 11th of October. The song is one which obviously hits close to home – it’s about the yearning to live the life that many only dream of. Superstar the single features verses from Ice Prince and Loose Kanyon.
