Commentary: Am I the only one not Interested in lying to 2face?

I’ve had a series of arguments with quite a number of people ever since nominees for The Headies were announced and I found out that 2Face was going to be inducted into the hall of fame (or giving a legendary award).

I found it very shallow and I’m still wondering what the organizers of Headies were thinking. This particularly irks me especially considering stories surrounding his plan to retire (hopefully false).

Before you shoot me, hear me out first. By international standards (a standard we should be holding 2Face to) there’s nothing ‘extraordinary’ about how long he has been in Music.

Surely, it’s admirable and worthy but people have been active in music for way longer. 2Face, has the potential to be an active chart topper in Nigeria for many years to come and inducting him into a hall of fame is a subtle way of saying “baba dey go.”

I strongly believe it’s premature to give 2Face an induction into legendary status not because he’s not deserving but because it’s myopic. If the Hall of fame was an artiste of the decade or something else with a time frame then there’s no problem. But it’s too premature.

I also think there are people who are more deserving of that award. Those who are really legendary, the forefathers of Nigerian music. The Majek Fashek’s and the Onyeka Owenu’s.

I would rather see that award go to Ebenezer Obey, or Ras Kimono. I would even rather give it to Awilo and Daddy Showkey! What of Fela Kuti, does he have a Headie? What of the Hausa legend, Dan Maraya? Why not them?

I believe these and many more are the people such an induction is befitting at this point. We keep forgetting our history and we are doing it again by giving this award to 2Face. His time has not yet come to be very honest.

In my opinion, what 2Face needs the most now is not an induction to a hall of fame but a hit song! A big hit! Since Rainbow, 2Face’s songs have been very middle of the road. His Ascension album is best to be quickly forgotten.

Nigerian music doesn’t easily forgive the a sense of hit songs, just ask M.I and D’ Banj. 2Face musically has been quiet for years now and anyone that’s truly a fan needs to tell him to get back in the studio.
