Supreme Court may save Governor Wike today… or not

Nyesom Wike's fate rests on the ruling of the Supreme Court | YNaija.com

At the moment, the fate of Nyesom Wike as Governor of Rivers state, rests solely on the Supreme Court.

The apex court is on Tuesday, expected to deliver a judgment on the issue of the jurisdiction of the Rivers State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.

The Justice Mohammed Ambrosa-led tribunal nullified the election of Governor Nyesom Wike on Saturday, October 24.

The tribunal ruled that the Rivers governorship election of April 11, 2015 was conducted in substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

Immediately after the ruling, Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party, filed an appeal before the Supreme Court, to challenge the jurisdiction of the tribunal over its relocation from Port Harcourt to Abuja.

The tribunal had, during the course of sitting, relocated to Abuja, over security concerns.

But Wike and the PDP argued that the tribunal lacked territorial jurisdiction to hear the petition of Dakuku Peterside and the All Progressives Congress, in Abuja.

If the Supreme Court rules today, that the proceedings of the tribunal was carried out without requisite jurisdiction, the ruling and sitting of the tribunal would have been an exercise in futility.

Consequently, the nullification of Nyesom Wike’s election would not stand.
