10 sure signs that your child is (totally) spoilt

by Rebecca Gruber

Spoil me rotten! They say you can’t spoil a baby with endless amounts of holding, rocking, and cooing, but once that child passes the toddler years, overindulgence can make for one ill-behaved tot. It’s easy to pick out the spoiled kid on the playground but much harder to turn a critical eye on ourselves. Here’s a checklist of 10 signs that indicate that you may have a spoiled child on your hands.

She Throws Tantrums, Often

The surest sign of a spoiled child is one who frequently throws temper tantrums, both in public and at home.

She Isn’t Ever Satisfied

Spoiled children often can’t express satisfaction with what they have. If they see someone else with something, they will want that instead.

He Isn’t Helpful

No child likes to clean up, but once the toddler years have passed, he should be willing to help with smaller tasks, such as cleaning up his toys and putting his shoes away.

He Tries to Control Adults

Spoiled children often don’t delineate between their peers and adults, expecting both to listen to them at all times.

He Frequently Embarrasses You in Public

A slip up here and there is normal, but when a tot purposely embarrasses his parent in public for the sake of attention, the situation moves beyond an isolated event.

She Won’t Share

Sharing is a difficult concept for lil ones to master, but once a child reaches the age of 4, she should be more willing to share toys, snacks, etc. with friends and siblings.

You Have to Beg Him

A parent or caretaker is an authority figure and should be obeyed when a request is made. You should not need to beg your child to have a task completed.

He Ignores You

No child likes to hear the word “no,” but he shouldn’t ignore you when you speak to him.

She Won’t Play Alone

By the age of 4, a child should be willing (and able) to play on her own for a stretch of time. Needing a parent or playmate to play with demonstrates her need for attention.

You Have to Bribe Him

Parents should not have to bribe their lil ones with money, toys, treats, or the like in order to get them to do routine tasks.

Richard McTear, a 26-year-old Florida man, has been convicted of murder on Thursday, 31 July, for throwing a 3-month-old boy out a moving car window along an interstate, killing the toddler on impact with the ground.

Prosuctors say McTear got into a fight with ex-girlfriend Jasmine Bedwell, 22, after she returned home with her son from a friend’s house in 2009.

McTear blocked the door when Bedwell tried to flee and grabbed her son, Emanuel Wesley Murray, during the struggle. He then took off down Interstate 275 in Tampa, throwing the baby out of the window, prosecutors said.

Although the baby’s blood stains were found on McTear’s shorts and in a car he was known to drive, defense attorneys argued that McTear was innocent and questioned the mother’s credibility.

The jury deliberated for over seven hours before finding McTear guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping, battery and aggravated child abuse charges.

McTear’s sentence could be up to a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole, with jurors having the option to recommend the death penalty.

Sentencing will be done on Monday, 4 August.

#StoriesWeHear: Baby dies in church during dedication

by Zara Mustapha

A baby belonging to Godwin and Amaka Mark was reported to have died after its dedication by a pastor who presides over a church at Baruwa area of Ipaja in Lagos.

According to blogger Linda Ikeji, the story was reported a witness who insists on the authenticity of the story.

The source said the Pastor (names withheld) dedicated the baby on June 1 but soon after the blessing, the baby reportedly gave up right there in church.

Mrs. Mark is said to be pointing accusing fingers at the Pastor who, according to her, had a hand in her baby’s death.

Linda Ikeji’s blog reported it thus:

“The story is about a couple who attends a church around the IPO axis in Lagos. The name of the Church is (name withheld) opposite the MTN mast in Baruwa around Ipaja area of Lagos State. The Pastor whose name is (name withheld) dedicated a baby on sunday 1st June, 2014 and the baby (pictured above) died right there in the church.

It was an unusual thing to have seen a pastor dedicating a baby without carrying the baby on his hand. What the Pastor did was to sprinkle oil and he prayed without even touching the baby. When someone who was invited by the couple, Godwin and Amaka Mark asked them why the pastor wasn’t carrying the baby, they stated that it was a norm in that church for babies to be dedicated in that manner. Soon after the benediction, the Pastor disappeared from the church and when the parents of the dead baby realized that their child was no more breathing, they called the pastor on his mobile phone.

The pastor refused to come back to the church stating that he had already taken off his clothes. He was further told that the baby which he had just dedicated was dead and his response was, “it is well”!

The bereaved parents had to go and bury their dead child with the assistance of the invited guests.

The following day, the pastor sent some people to pay a condolence visit to the bereaved couple. The mother of the deceased child said that the pastor knows about the death of her child and when she expressed her displeasure over the Pastor’s actions, the emissary went back to inform the pastor.

The pastor has threatened to sue Mrs Amaka Mark if she does not retract her statement within 7days.

Mr and Mrs Mark made it very clear to the pastor that they were ready for any legal tussle with him. Now the pastor has been pleading with the couple in order not to make it public.

Many are, however, wondering if the baby was given a clean bill of health by a medical personnel before the church dedication. It will be interesting to observe how the Mark family hopes to prove the complicity of the said pastor in the baby’s death.
