Teenage mother dumps baby in church, leaves note

by Mayowa Salami

You can imagine the shock that hit parishioners of the Saint Augustine’s Catholic Church, Ibusa, Delta State, when they were greeted with an abandoned baby girl in front of the church while filing in for morning mass over the weekend.

The new born baby girl was said to have been abandoned by an unidentified teenage mother who for some reasons believe the baby will be better taken care of by the religious institution.

Eyewitnesses say she accompanied with baby with a note pleading with the parish priest to assume full responsibility of the baby’s welfare assuring him that she will return to claim her “at an appropriate time.”

The mother who observers believe must have had some form of affiliation with the church appeared to have everything planned because she also left in the note suggesting a name for the abandoned child, Ogechi.

According to Vanguard Newspapers, a visibly astonished eyewitness said who didn’t want to be named said, “My brother, it was a big shock. The mother of the baby even wrote a note to the parish priest, saying that he should name the child Ogechi (God’s time), and promised to come for her at the appropriate time.”

We certainly pray that she returns.
