The Federal High Court, sitting at Adeoyo, Ibadan, on Friday sentenced 18-year-old, Ibrahim Olayiwola, to six months in prison and is also to pay a fine of N50, 000 for drug peddling.

Justice Abimbola Obaseki-Adejumo said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. She also held that the court was presented with overwhelming evidence that Olayiwola was arrested with 1.2 kg of Indian hemp.

Delivering judgment, Obaseki-Adejumo said that in sentencing the convict, the court took into consideration the old age of Olayiwola’s mother. “The court will consider the old age of your mother and her plea. Furthermore, you are still a young man, with a future ahead of you,” she said.

The judge, thereafter, sentenced Olayiwola to six months imprisonment, and backdated his punishment to May, when he was arrested. She also ordered the convict to pay a fine of N50,000 upon the completion of his jail term.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had arraigned the convict on a one-count charge of possession of Indian Hemp. The agency alleged that Olayiwola committed the crime on May 26, at the Bodija market, Ibadan.

The NDLEA alleged that Olayiwola’s offence was contrary to the provisions of Section 11 (C) of the NDLEA Act, Cap 17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
