A day-old baby was abandoned by the roadside at Onigbagbo Bus Stop, Ikeja in Lagos on Thursday, May 8.

According to witnesses, the abandoned baby boy who was wrapped in an ankara cloth was rescued by residents and passersby before any harm could come to him.

The baby was seen at about 7.30 am as people took turns to look at him, raining curses on the yet-to-be indentified mother who dumped him by the roadside, subjecting to harsh conditions.

The chairman of Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area, Mr. Babatunde Oke, was informed about the presence of an abandoned baby in his council area.

He was said to have reached out to the Supervisory Councillor for Health, Mr. Gbenga Adedeji, who went to the scene with an ambulance. Adedeji reported took the child away.

Adedeji later told PUNCH Metro that the baby was weak and frail.

He said, “We took him to the Oregun Primary Health Centre where he was bathed, fed and given medication.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the baby was later transferred to the Little Saints Orphanage, Onipanu, Lagos, from where he was moved by the management of the orphanage to its branch at the Akowonjo area.

Oke said he paid a visit to the oprhanage on Wednesday and made cash donation, clothing and other materials for the welfare of the abandoned baby and other inmates.
