Usman Gwandu, the Deputy Controller of Prisons in charge of the Sokoto Central Prison was yesterday killed by gunmen at SARDA Quarters in the state.

The gunmen were said to have trailed his car and rained bullets on his car killing him. They, however, did not remove anything from his vehicle.

Reports say help could not get to the attacked controller of prisons until about an hour after the incident because residents of the area were scared for their safety.

He was later rushed to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, where he was confirmed dead by doctors.

His remains had been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

The spokesman of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Sani Salihu confirmed the incident and assured that the police have commenced investigation into the attack.

The corpse, according to a hospital source, will be released to his family later today for burial at Gwandu in Kebbi.
