Men of the Joint Military Task Force in Kano yesterday repelled an attack by unknown gunmen at its Mariri check-point, killing two of them and capturing five.

Sources say two innocent civilians, a man and a woman, were killed in the shootout which lasted for about an hour.

The Mariri check-point is located on the Kano- Wudil federal highway.

Capt. Ikediche Iweha, the JTF spokesman in Kano confirmed the attack saying an AK-47 assault rifle was recovered from the gunmen.

After the attack which left traffic on the busy highway disrupted, Iweha urged the public to return to their normal activites assuring them that things have been put under control.

“We have out-gunned the militants that attacked our checkpoint located at Mariri a while ago, we killed two and captured five,” he said.

He reportedly assured of preparedness of the military to contain any insurgent activities that might arise assuring that they are on top of the security situation.
