In honour of Mother’s Day, media entrepreneur and organiser of How To Fix Nigeria, Funmi Iyanda, took on the elephant in the room. Why are we more inclined to think of bad fathers than we are bad mothers? Why the deification of parents? Doesn’t said deification prevent us from recognising they are human and flawed, like everybody else?

On a day like this, let's look at the elephant in the room. It's easier for most to admit; my father is/was shit than my mother is/was shit. https://t.co/qXOsoKzZif

The deification of motherhood invites us to worship mothers but not question them. To desire motherhood but not question worthfulness of it. https://t.co/vZ9GXYgXgg

The decision to be a parent is one of the most important any one person will make yet we are not encouraged to examine it or prepare for it. https://t.co/HH456J1I4N

Today there'll be many who know their mothers have been deeply injurious to who they are, many more do not realise or admit this truth. https://t.co/stnBdmKLey

So ask yourself, is the reaction/behaviour/status of your mother in her own relationship to your father what you'd wish for your daughter? https://t.co/4i0IgNJfbY

This doesn't take away from your love of her which is often hard wired and pointless denying but it invites you to take better control of .. https://t.co/2fwO7P8DST

And to those for whom a healthy relationship with their mother is not a current or future reality for whatever reason, it gives comfort. https://t.co/XmPqU1p56e

We should let each person take parenting decision not as a duty of self perpetuation but a self determined desire to nurture a separate life https://t.co/EBsqRFDhtL

These are just my thoughts, remember, l am not your idol, l am not your auntie. I am fully flawed, like you. Happy Mother's Day. ? https://t.co/IOtoil49Ff
