#TheHeadies2014: 10 things you definitely missed at the star-studded event

by Isi Esene

The Headies 2014 measured up to all expectations with the glitz and glamour the foremost entertainment awards is known to throw up.

The awards which dragged on till the wee hours of Monday morning had the usual suspects, Davido, Olamide, Patoranking, Sean Tizzle, Don Jazzy, Timi Dakolo, Oritsefemi and more, having a good showing.

Many things happened in the full glare of the audience while others played out behind the scenes but we have compiled a list of 10 things you definitely missed at #TheHeadies2014 which took place at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotel & Suites, VI, Lagos.

Check it out:

– It’s not likely that you missed the fact that the highly anticipated awards started over 5 hours behind schedule. The commencement of the show dragged on for like ages making the show – which was expected to end on Sunday – end on a workday. Not cool.

– Wizkid arrived the venue around 1:20am – he stopped by close to the front row where Davido and the rest of the HKN Gang were seated to exchange pleasantries. Wizkid gave the Aye singer a tight hug and quickly moved on with his entourage.

– Just as others were coming over to say hi, Davido also had a cause to show some respect to legendary artistes before him – the Skelewu singer went flat on the floor when Fuji artiste, KWAM 1 walked by. It shows how much respect the young singer has for those who have blazed the trail before him.

– Ragga artiste, Cynthia Morgan gave the most impressive performance of the night and the crowd totally wanted more of her. Morgan, who wore a long flowing red/black outer coat with a low cut neck which threatened to spill her ample breasts, performed her song, I’m Taken, and we were all taken by it.

– Olamide received his first award of the day with a volley of expletives insisting that Lil Kesh deserves to be recognized. “Lil Kesh, you’re the rookie of the year, f__k that s__t,” he said. Many believe the Awon Goons Mi singer was speaking under the influence but what do we know?

– Runtown’s performance of the hit-track Successful was anything but that. The artiste who showed up in all black e’rything simply paced around the stage leaving many to wonder when he would actually start singing… the whole routine dipped into an anticlimax when he suddenly dropped the mic and made his way backstage – dassall!

Pull over singer, Kcee had, by far, the best Headies acceptance speech of 2014. As soon as he received his statuette, the singer went on to say this: “I dedicate this to everyone who have belief in themselves. I am here because I believe in myself….”

– Not willing to allow Kcee to take the shine off him,  raggae dancehall artiste, Patoranking also went on stage to give the audience his own dose of inspiration. The Girlie O singer received his second (or is it third?) award and went on to stun the audience with a heart-shattering revelation – hear this: “Two years ago I was staying in a one room [apartment] in Ebute Meta but now I stay… somewhere around.”

No, that’s not the shocking statement, here it is: “What if I tell you that I once sold a rat killer? What if I told you I was once a bricklayer….?”

Let’s just say Patoranking started from the rock bottom.

– The organizers of the Headies did a good job in trying put the spotlight once again on Rosie artiste, Blackky but this morning’s experiment surely didn’t achieve the required result. The UNILAG 90s sensation stormed the stage looking tired and out of breathe.

The audience tried to pick up the tune from him but the Bang Belly singer still came up short.

In the past few weeks, we’ve witnessed older artistes like Sunny Ade, Ras Kimono, KWAM 1, Sir Victor Uwaifo perform on different stages with the vocal command of their various rendition never put in doubt.

We love you Blackky but you need to drop the bang belly to step up to the plate – the competition on the streets is carnivorous.

– After his performance which happened around 3: 40am today, Davido received his Song of the Year award with an entourage of not less than 16 people – known as the HKN Gang. Only Baddo aka Olamide had a larger entourage when he hit the stage to receive his Album of the Year award – he was accompanied by 19 guys.

Bonus:

Davido received the Song of the Year award ending his vote of thanks with a statement which goes something like this: “…2014 came and I became the baddest!”

Yes, we know this statement is not targeted at any rival artiste – we’re just saying.

Great event this Headies.
