This thief was caught ‘with his pants down’ by man whose house he was raiding (PICTURED)

A brave householder grabbed a young burglar by his leg and pulled down his trousers as he fled.

Heating engineer Christopher Newbury, 56, clung on to the burglar’s baggy trousers after catching him red-handed during a break-in at his home.

The villain was forced to flee in his underwear as Christopher was left holding his trousers to hand over to police as evidence to collar the burglar.

Forensic scientists got to the bottom of crime by finding the burglar’s DNA on the pair of baggy trousers.

Brave Christopher won a £100 bravery reward from a judge as burglar Mohammed Ali, 21, was jailed.

He said: ‘He threatened me that he had a knife but I was determined to hang onto him.

‘I grabbed hold of his trouser leg – and they just came down.

‘They were those baggy trousers that youngsters wear half way down their backsides these days.

‘He just stepped out of them and ran away in his underwear. But I was left holding the evidence.

‘It was actually quite comical. I find it funny now – but at the time I was upset because he managed to run away.’

Father-of-two Christopher suffered bruises to his face, chest and wrist as he grappled with Ali after catching him during the burglary at his home in Grangetown, Cardiff, in February of this year.

He said: ‘I am not a young man. It was just my determination not to let him go that made me do it.’

Ali – who has previous convictions for burglary, robbery and possessing an imitation firearm – handed himself in after realising his DNA was on his baggy trousers.

The family was returning home when they saw lights on and caught the burglar red-handed upstairs as he ransacked their home.

Prosecutor Tony Trigg said: ‘Mr Newbury confronted him and was told: “I’ve got a knife, get off me.”

‘He was punched and had his head swung into the car window but still grabbed onto the defendant’s legs. He was left with his trousers.’

It came just months after the family’s home suffered another burglary when they lost £5,000 worth of valuables, including irreplaceable family heirlooms.

Christopher told police: ‘I was determined not to let him get away with it.

‘It was terrifying. I did not know how many of them were in my house.

‘When I went inside, I heard a floorboard creak and knew he was in my son’s bedroom.’

Ali, of Cardiff, was jailed for two years and eight months after he admitted burglary, assault and criminal damage.

He said he was high on cannabis at the time. He was already on bail for an earlier burglary.

Christopher was commended by a Judge Patrick Curran QC who gave him £100 from public funds for showing ‘great personal courage’.

He said: ‘He showed great personal courage and as a result of leaving items behind, the defendant knew he would be tracked down.

‘It is only a token amount but the money should be paid from public funds for conduct I commend.’

After the case, wife June, 56, said: ‘The sentence should have been much longer. We have lived here for 30 years, but now I do not feel safe in my own home.

‘The house was a mess – he had trashed everything. The mess he made was disgusting.

‘But I’m very proud of my husband for grabbing his trousers and bringing him to justice.’
