In July this year, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun announced that Nigeria was technically in a recession. Since that time, things have gone from bad to worse, particularly for goods and services. Forex has been scarce, so much so that the Federal Government has tried shutting down unregistered bereau de change operators across the country because it reckons they are to blame, in part, for this prolonged scarcity. The dollar is trading at 465 naira today, and small indomie sells for 60 naira.
However, the fact that things are bad economically does not mean people are feeling the pinch across the board. Afterall, it was only in September Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, said that Nigerians might be “over sensationalising so-called hardship“, because a Virgin Atlantic flight from Lagos to London was filled with our country men.
