TICKER: 68-year-old punched to death by friend of daughter’s suitor

Tragedy struck on September 2,2012, after a 29-year-old boy simply called Lekan, beat  a 68-year-old woman, Falilat Bakare to death at Shibiri Ekunpa Street, Ojo, Lagos.  Incidentally, the suspect is a friend to the fiance of Madam Falilat’s younger daughter, Abibatu.

The circumstances that surrounded the incident was as intriguing as it was bizarre.

Crime Guard learnt that trouble started when Kazeem, the fiance to late Madam Falilat’s younger daughter, reportedly called Lekan to accompany him to his would-be in-law’s house.   Eyewitness account said Lekan, on getting to the house, met his friend kazeem beating up  Abibatu.

It was gathered that in a bid to defend her daughter, Madam Falilat rushed to stop Kazeem but was prevented by Lekan with a punch on her chest.  Unexpectedly, the old woman reportedly slumped and died. When Lekan noticed he had killed the old woman, he ran away but was apprehended by the neighborhood watch at Oke Afor area.

When Crime Guard visited the family of the deceased, they were still in shock. Members of the family narrated the incident that led to the death of their mother.   One of her sons who disclosed that Abibatu, the girl at the center of the controversy, had gone to Panti Police Station with their elder brother, stated that he saw Lekan punched his mother at the chest.  “When I was returning from an errand my mum sent me, I saw people gathering in front of our house. I rushed to know the cause of the gathering.  On getting there, I saw Lekan punched my mum on her chest.”

Other members of the family disclosed that Kazeem who took to his heels when his friend, Lekan, punched Madam Falilat to death has been in love tangle with their sister, Abibat, for four years before she decided to quit the relationship after discovering that Kazeem had impregnated another girl.

They alleged that instead of letting her go, Kazeem kept threatening Abibat, even insulting her in public whenever he sees her chatting with male friends.   Ismalia Bakare, the elder son to the Bakares said that on that faithful day, he was called by one of their mother’s neighbours to come quickly to their house that some unknown visitors had beaten up his mother.  On getting there, he saw his mother lying helplessly on the floor.

‘’When some people rushed to my house to tell me that my mother was beaten up by unknown men, I rushed immediately to the scene and saw my mother lying helplessly on the floor, thinking she fell down out of shock and  pains, I sent my younger brother to buy balm so I could massage her with it so that she could wake up.

But, she didn’t wake up, we quickly rushed her to Muskat Hospital and there she was certified dead by the doctors. So, I ran to Baba Saka, the leader of our vigilante group, the next day to report what has happened to my mother and he responded quickly by apprehending Lekan through the arrest of his father,” he lamented.

Crime Guard further learnt from their neighbours that after Abibat broke the relationship with Kazeem, she had not rested because even when Abibatu meets her ex-fiance on the street, he pursues her. So in a bid to end the embarrassment, her mother, Mrs Falilat Bakare, went to see the mother of her daughter’s ex-fiance to settle the case amicably only for her to be abused.

Kazeem kept on making life miserable for Abibat even when she made it clear to him that she was no more interested in the relationship. This, according to reports, continued until the black Sunday that the mother of Abibat was allegedly punched to death by Lekan.

The leader of the vigilante group who arrested Lekan, Mr Saka narrated how he responded immediately he got the information.  “I was at home when one Ismaila and some other people cried to my house to lay the complaint that one Kazeem and Lekan beat up their mother to death and they both had disappeared into thin air.

So, I ordered my boys to comb the area and arrest him and if he was not seen,  any closely-related person in his family should be held responsible.  So, my boys searched for him but didn’t find him.  They arrested the father and we took him to Ajangbadi Hausa Ilemba police and he gave us the address to the hide-out of his son.

We took immediate action by going to Area k police station to make a complaint.  Two officers were assigned to assist us. We got to the address and saw Lekan hiding in his sick mother’s house.  We told the sick mother who is suffering from stroke what the son did.  She was short of words.

We arrested Lekan and took him to Oto Awori local council government and later handed him over to the Police at Ajangbadi Hausa Ilemba division for further investigation, ” he narrated. Crime Guard learnt that both the police and the neighborhood watch in the area are in pursuit of Kazeem who disappeared after Lekan was arrested.
