TICKER: Bizzare Twist: Police say woman who says KKK set her on fire actually did it to herself

In a bizarre twist to the case of Sharmeka Moffitt, police are now saying that the woman wasn’t set on fire by members of the Ku Klux Klan.  Instead, they say that she actually did it all to herself.
The woman in Winnsboro is being accused of making up a story in which she said that she was approached by three men wearing white hoods.  She said that in Civitan Park, the men doused her in lighter fluid, set her on fire and then put the letters “KKK” on the side of her car.  Police, however, are disagreeing with the woman’s version of events, instead saying that they found her finger prints on the lighter and bottle of lighter fluid used to burn her.

Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb held a press conference during which he discussed all forensic evidence that pointed out Sharmeka Moffitt as the perpetrator of this heinous crime.

“Basically, we had to follow the facts,” Cobb said. “This was a disturbing case for all involved. All indications show this was a self-inflicted situation.”

Moffitt is now recovering in critical condition at LSU hospital. A Facebook fan page, “Prayers for Sharmeka” was set up to bring national media attention to her story.  Now, police say that the story may be more complex than we first thought.
