TICKER: Driver jailed in Lagos for stealing spare tyre to treat his child

A truck driver, Efe Godspower, 25, was sentenced to one month imprisonment by an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for stealing a tyre worth N40,000.

NAN reported that Magistrate I.O. Afunwa convicted Godspower following his guilty plea on arraignment.

Afunwa condemned stealing and hoped that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.

Godspower, an employee of Veton Logistic and Service Ltd, Ojota, had admitted to stealing his own truck’s spare tyre, which he sold and used the proceeds to treat his sick child.

“I don’t want to touch the company’s goods; the only thing I could do to save my daughter’s life was to sell that tyre. I sold it for N7,000 only,” he said.

Prosecutor Kemi Adeniran had said that Godspower, who had been driving the truck for three years, stole the tyre when he arrived in Lagos from Enugu with the truck.

Adeniran said the incident occurred on Oct.19 at the company’s premises located at 127, Ikorodu Road, Ojota.

“When the convict was interrogated, it was discovered that the spare tyre had been sold,” she said.

Adeniran said that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
