An employer tortured her maid to death in an attempt to force her to become better at housework, a court heard.
The Emirati woman abused the Ethiopian maid daily after she moved in during Ramadan, Abu Dhabi Criminal Court heard.
She poured boiling water over the maid and tied her up with electrical wire, reported 7daysinDubai. The maid was found dead in her employer’s bathroom.
The employer told the court: ‘I only beat her up. I just wanted her to do the housework properly. I didn’t mean to hurt or kill her.’
The accused woman’s two children said they had witnessed the daily torture.
Her daughter told prosecutors: ‘One day, during Ramadan, I found my mother beating up the maid. She poured boiling water on her body and threw pepper in her eyes.’
She added: ‘The woman could not resist the torture.’
The defendant was arrested after her son reported the maid’s death.
She admitted to prosecutors she whipped the maid with wire 10 days before her death because she was lazy.
She is accused of trying to hide evidence of the killing by getting her children to change the maid’s clothes to hide the blood.
A forensic report revealed that the woman died from wounds she sustained during an assault.
A doctor told the court an examination of the woman revealed she had been tortured over time.
The Emirati boss was charged with assault leading to death, although she denied the charge.
The case was adjourned to December 31 and the woman remains in custody.
