Today’s Daily Brief: Ambode tells motorists not to attack LASTMA officials, Union kicks against conversion of colleges of education to varsities, and more

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday praised Chad for joining the fight against Boko Haram, saying further cooperation was essential in the future.

The 72-year-old met Chad’s President Idriss Deby in the capital, N’Djamena, after a visit Wednesday to Niger, which is also part of a four-nation coalition tackling the Islamist militants.

Buhari, who took office last Friday, has made ending the insurgency a priority, after six years of violence that has left at least 15,000 people dead.

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday warned motorists to desist from attacking officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) while performing their legitimate duties.

This is contained in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Habib Aruna in Lagos.

“The full force of the law will be brought to bear on all erring members of the public who attempt any illegality in terms of obstructing operatives of LASTMA from carrying out their legitimate and lawful duties,” the statement said.

Leadership

The House of Representatives on Thursday granted approval to President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint 15 special advisers.

The House gave the approval after it received a letter from the President requesting it to enable him appoint the advisers to help him discharge his functions.

Buhari had written a similar letter to the Senate for approval on Tuesday.

The motion seeking the House’ approval was moved by House Majority Leader, Mulikat Akande-Adeola, at a session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha.

She noted that the President’s request and the subsequent approval granted by the House complied with the provisions of Sections 151(1) and 151(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The motion was passed in a unanimous voice vote.

The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has faulted the decision of the Federal Government to convert four Colleges of Education to universities.

Mr Nuhu Ogirima, the General Secretary of the union, stated in Abuja on Thursday while briefing newsmen.

According to him, such decision will not ensure professionalism in the teaching profession.

Leadership

Ebonyi State Governor, Mr. Dave Umahi, has reversed the appointment of 16 permanent secretaries made by former Governor Martin Elechi, barely a week to the end of his administration.

Umahi reversed the appointment on Thursday in Abakaliki during a meeting with the leadership of the organised labour in the state and the Christian Association of Nigeria.

The governor said he took the decision because his administration inherited an empty treasury from its predecessor, adding that the appointment of additional permanent secretaries would create more problems for the government.

He said, “The state government is finding it difficult to pay workers’ salaries as it grapples with the challenge of meeting other financial needs.
