President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday met the Senate President, David Mark and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

‪None of them spoke with State House correspondents on discussions at the closed-door meeting.

No official statement was issued after the meeting.

But the meeting is not unconnected with the government’s desire to get the National Assembly nod for extension of emergency rule in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe and tackling matters generated by the recent defection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, from the Peoples Democratic Party to the rival All Progressives Congress.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has confirmed reports that he is putting on hold his ambition to fly the flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in next year’s election.

Tambuwal, who is considered by many as a strong contender for the top prize, made his decision known today in a statement giving his reasons for withdrawing from the race.

The Speaker who defected for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in October said he is stepping down for the unity of his party.

Stakeholders of Peoples Democratic Party in Borno State on Tuesday said the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 would bring an end to the activities of terrorists in the country.

Rising from a stakeholders meeting in Maiduguri, the elders and leaders said a change in strategy, which a new administration might introduce, would allow the violence in the region to drag unnecessarily.

Throwing their support behind the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East, especially the extension of the state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, the party stalwarts promised to do everything to ensure the success of Jonathan in the 2015 election.

The political crisis in Ekiti State deepened on Tuesday as Governor Ayodele Fayose allegedly ordered the sealing off of the office of the Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin.

This followed the action of seven Peoples Democratic Party members and three unknown persons, who sat in the Assembly on Monday, and appointed Mr. Dele Olugbemi as Protem Speaker.

But Fayose last night described the allegation as another falsehood from the Speaker.

A statement by the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Wole Olujobi‎, said the governor had earlier employed threats and coercion, including freezing the accounts of the Assembly and cutting off electricity supply to the Speaker’s lodge.
