Today’s Daily Brief: Fayose vows to prosecute Aderiye’s killers, 20 PDP lawmakers threaten to defect in Katsina, INEC tasks journalists on ethical standards, and more

The deputy chairman of the Jigawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Aminu Jahun, has urged the party’s national headquarters to sanction all the senators seeking automatic tickets.

Mr. Jahun told PREMIUM TIMES in Kano that Senators hell-bent on obtaining automatic tickets had nothing to show for their years in office and that they were fully representing their people.

He said the issue of automatic ticket was clearly against the democratic ideal as after serving for four to even 12 years one should believe there were other capable contestants.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday urged journalists to operate in line with the ethics of the profession.

The Chairman of the commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, represented by Kogi Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, gave the advice while delivering a paper at the just-concluded training workshop for journalists in Lokoja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop, tagged: “Effective Coverage and Reportage of 2015 General Elections’’ was organised by the Nigerian Press Council (NPC), in conjunction with UN Development Programme.

Leadership

Barring last minutes change of plan, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State may be set for the worst defection of its life time as no fewer than 20 of its members at the State House of Assembly have threatened to dump the party for the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC).

Our correspondent gathered that the lawmakers are aggrieved that leadership of the party denied them chance to either seek re-election or seek other higher offices from their current position as members of the state assembly.

Leadership

Mr Olakunle Oluomo, member, Ogun House of Assembly, on Saturday, said defection of some members of the House to other parties would not affect the chances of All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2015 general elections.

Oluomo, who represents Ifo1 in the assembly, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta.

He said those that defected exercised their democratic rights to move from one party to another, and in spite the defections, APC was still the leading party in the state.

Leadership

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has promised to collaborate with security agents to ensure the prosecution of the killers of a former Ekiti State Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers, Chief Omolafe Aderiye.
