Lawyers and civil rights activists have called for the impeachment and prosecution of the Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, over his role in a mob attack on a federal high court in the state two weeks ago.

The groups described the governor’s act as “criminal” and an abuse of the rule of law.

The calls came after PREMIUM TIMES published a video showing Mr. Dickson leading thugs to the court house in Yenagoa, the Baylesa State capital.

Senator Victor Ndoma Egba, the Senate Leader says the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, with its recent electoral loss is paying a very high prize for acts of impunity perpetrated the party occasioned by mental laziness and the inability of the leadership of the party to think.

Senator Ndoma Egba who was reacting to reports that his supporters have left the PDP in droves for the All Progressive Congress, APC, which is a prelude to his planned defection to the party said in the past three years he had been shot out from the PDP decision making process because the Party took a simplistic approach to the dynamics of the developments in the party without recourse to broad based consultations.

The All Progressives Congress has urged Nigerians to disregard what it described as “the wild speculations” making the rounds concerning the appointment of ministers and the zoning of offices under the incoming Muhammadu Buhari administration.
In a statement in Abuja on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said there was no truth to anything that had been dished out by the “hyperactive rumour mill” concerning the issue of appointment, especially the zoning of the National Assembly’s principal positions and other offices.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, is hopeful that citizens affected by the xenophobic attacks in South Africa will be compensated.

Since the renewed attacks started last week, several Nigerians have lost their businesses and other belongings to fire set by locals on buildings where their businesses were housed.

Senator Obanikoro in an interview with Channels TV, said that Nigerian High Commissioner, Martin Cobham and other delegations were taking stock of damages done to Nigerians to ensure that adequate compensation would be given to them.

Barely a few days to the scheduled rerun of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections in Imo State, the All Progressive Grand Alliance and the United Peoples Party have insisted on fresh elections in the state.

State chairman of APGA, Mr. Peter Ezeobi, who spoke with The PUNCH in Owerri on Monday, said this position was informed by allegation of massive electoral irregularities that characterised the April 11 election.

Ezeobi claimed that its governorship candidate, Capt Emmanuel Ihenacho(retd.), won the earlier election but was rigged out by the other parties in the state.
