The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria has congratulated Akinwunmi Ambode of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his victory at the just-concluded governorship elections in Lagos.

ERA/FoEN urged him to live up to his electoral promises when he assumes office, particularly the immediate reversal of the planned privatisation of water in Lagos.

Mr. Ambode won the April 11 Lagos gubernatorial election​,​ beating his closest rival, Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party to clinch the governorship slot in one of the most keenly contested elections in Lagos’ history.

Senator President, David Mark and Senator Barnabas Gemade Tuesday received their certificate of return as Senators-elect from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

An INEC National Commissioner, Chief Lawrence Nwuruku handed the certificates to them at the National Assembly according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Senate President, Paul Mumeh, in Abuja.

The statement reads in part: “Mark would be returning to the Senate for the 5th time on the platform of People Democratic Party (PDP) while Gemade who came to the Senate in 2011 on the platform of PDP, would be returning to the Senate the second time on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).”

The residence of a member of the House of Representatives for Irele / Okitipupa Federal Constituency in Ondo State, Albert Akintoye, was set ablaze by suspected political thugs in Akotogbo, Irele Local Government Area on Sunday as election results were announced.

Our correspondent gathered that the thugs arrived the scene with dangerous weapons expecting to meet the lawmaker at home.

The hoodlums, numbering about 12, broke into the house while firing gunshots and vandalised the property before setting it on fire.

One year after 276 girls of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State were abducted, one of the 57 girls that escaped from Boko Haram Tuesday, broke down over doubt of the kidnap.

Miss Rebecca John stated this in Abuja, while addressing the Acting Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Education,  Dr. Muhammed Bello Umar, at the Global School Girls March one of the events of  a Week of Global Action events to commemorate the tragedy of the abduction, organized by #BringBackOurGirls, BBOG campaign group .

The Ministry who initially locked the protesters out but when the children continued chanting and demanded to speak with the Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, after about 45 minutes sent representatives,  Acting Permanent Secretary and Director Planning, Mrs. Omotowa.

On the one year anniversary of the abduction of over 200 Chibok girls, the National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki has assured that the girls will be rescued by the military, adding, that the Sambisa Forest will be liberated before May 29.

In a statement by PRNigeria, the NSA said, the movement of the terrorists is being monitored and the military is leaving no stone unturned to “rid the country of the last bastion of terrorists’ infestation”.

“Right now, all Boko Haram camps, except Sambisa Forest have been destroyed. The forest would have since been liberated but for the unfavourable weather condition prevailing in the area as all needed reconnaissance activity and necessary deployment of troops have been made for the operation. ”
