Airports under close watch to prevent Tompolo from fleeing Nigeria

Security agencies have began close scrutiny and observation of the nation’s airports, in a view to arrest former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.

Tompolo and a former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Akpobolokemi, alongside eight others, have been charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, for N34bn fraud.

The ex-militant leader has been ordered to appear in court to face trial, but he has failed to show up, even in spite of the recent declaration of him being ‘wanted’ by the authorities.

Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court in Lagos has twice ordered Tompolo’s arrest over his failure to appear before him to answer 30 counts of alleged fraud.

Security personnel at the nation’s airports, operatives of the Department of State Services and Nigeria Immigration Service have been put on notice, to be on the look out for Tompolo.

The measures are being put in place to arrest him, owing to reports that he’s planning to escape from Nigeria.

The court, had last Thursday, given the EFCC the green light to seize Tompolo’s assets following the inability of security agencies to arrest him.

Meanwhile, the Force Public Relations Officer, Bisi Kolawole, says the police were still on a manhunt for Tompolo.

“The police are working very hard and professionally too to arrest him as ordered by the court”, she said.
