A boy of 11 died after he was run over by a suspected drunk driver on a tractor.

Harry Whitlam was struck by the vehicle at a farm where he worked during the school summer holidays. He was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary but died after surgery.

The 48-year-old driver is believed to have been reversing at the time of the collision on a dirt track between two barns at Swithens Farm in Rothwell, Yorkshire.

He was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink-driving.

A worker at the farm – a popular visitor attraction – said yesterday that Harry adored being there.He said: “He used to help out feeding the cows and other animals. When the accident happened he was just lendoing a hand. We are all in shock. His mum Pam works here as a cook”.

Harry’s family live in nearby East Ardsley. His grandfather Ronald said: “We are all very shocked.”

The farm’s website describes it as an educational facility designed to show children how working farms operate. Yesterday, a notice on the site said: “There was a tragic accident on Friday 9th August and our thoughts are with Harry’s family.”

Joanna Baron, who was at the farm with her son Elliott, four, said: “This is awful.It’s such a lovely place.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The tractor driver has been bailed pending inquiries.”
